Trump called up Broock Desta, the academy's all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns, asking the crowd: "Do we have a little NFL future here? Maybe?" Desta dominated the gridiron across 36 career games, catching 29 touchdowns while also rushing for one and throwing another. He racked up 3,487 receiving yards on 234 catches.
Breaking Protocol for Excellence
The President also recognized Abby McAllister, the women's lacrosse program's all-time leader in assists and points. "Are you that good?" Trump asked jokingly before adding, "That's a big record."
Trump acknowledged the impromptu recognition disrupted his prepared remarks but defended the move. "We throw them a little off on timing when I do this, but what the hell? We have time. Right? This is your day. And when somebody achieves what these people did, we should give them a little extra recognition, right?"
Between honoring the athletes, Trump highlighted his 2019 executive order allowing military academy graduates to pursue professional sports careers before fulfilling their five-year active-duty requirement. The policy change addressed a longstanding barrier that hurt both recruitment and draft prospects.
Recruiting Advantage for Military Academies
"The problem is they had a service," Trump explained. "You know, they had to serve five years. And that's not exactly conducive to being drafted very high if you had to go away."
The President argued the policy delivered results beyond individual opportunities. "It has made such a difference. It's also made a big difference in recruiting. That's why your teams are better today than they used to be... it made your recruiting much better because you're able to now rec[ruit better]."
The ceremony marked Trump's continued engagement with military academies, where athletic excellence increasingly intersects with national service. Desta also played basketball during his senior season, showcasing the multi-sport talent that military academies cultivate alongside leadership training.
The executive order represents a broader effort to modernize military service pathways while maintaining readiness. Academy graduates can now test their professional sports potential without abandoning their military commitment, potentially returning to service with enhanced leadership experience and public profiles that benefit recruitment efforts.
