Five Republican state senators broke with President Trump on Tuesday, joining all Democrats to block a congressional redistricting proposal in South Carolina that Trump personally demanded lawmakers pass. The 29-17 vote in the Columbia statehouse fell two votes short of the two-thirds majority needed, dealing Trump a rare legislative defeat in a state where he won 55.1% of the vote in 2020.
