Finland activated the world's first permanent nuclear waste burial site Tuesday, descending spent uranium fuel rods hundreds of meters underground in a facility designed to contain radioactivity for 100,000 years — longer than human civilization has existed.

The Onkalo repository on Olkiluoto island received its first shipment of high-level nuclear waste from Finland's four operating reactors. Geologist Tuomas Pere guided visitors through disposal tunnels carved into bedrock 450 meters below the surface, where copper-sealed canisters will hold 5,500 tons of radioactive fuel over the coming decades.

"We're essentially creating a time capsule for nuclear waste that will outlast every government, every language, and potentially every memory of our current civilization," Pere said as his team demonstrated the loading process that began April 9.

The $4.1 billion facility answers a question that has plagued nuclear power since its inception: where to permanently store waste that remains dangerous for tens of thousands of years. Finland beat every other nuclear nation to operational status, including the United States, which has struggled for decades to open its Yucca Mountain site.

But environmental groups warn the project carries unprecedented risks. The waste will reach peak radioactivity 1,000 years from now, when the copper canisters face their greatest corrosion test. Any breach could contaminate groundwater across southern Finland for millennia.

Posiva, the company operating Onkalo, claims its multiple barrier system makes failure virtually impossible. Each fuel assembly gets sealed in cast iron, then welded inside copper canisters, then surrounded by bentonite clay that swells to block water infiltration. The stable granite bedrock hasn't shifted in 1.8 billion years.

The timing reflects Finland's massive bet on nuclear power. The country generates 35% of its electricity from atomic plants and plans to increase that percentage as it phases out Russian energy imports. Onkalo can handle waste from existing reactors through 2120, with expansion possible if Finland builds additional plants.

Other nations are watching closely. Sweden expects to open a similar repository by 2030, while France and the UK remain decades away from permanent solutions. The U.S. continues storing waste at reactor sites across the country, a temporary fix that has stretched past 40 years.

The first waste delivery marks just the beginning of Onkalo's century-long loading phase, followed by permanent sealing around 2125. Whether future generations will thank Finland for solving nuclear waste or curse it for creating an irreversible environmental threat won't be known for generations — exactly the kind of long-term gamble that makes nuclear power so contentious.
