NYPD bomb squad investigated a suspicious package Tuesday near the United Nations headquarters.
The New York Police Department said the package was found on East 43rd Street in Midtown Manhattan. Several blocks were closed during the high-level week of the General Assembly.
Police closed 42nd Street to 44th Street between Second Avenue and Lexington Avenue and urged the public to stay away from the area, the department said in an advisory posted on X.
A video appears to show a heavy police presence and blocked roads near 43rd Street and Third Avenue.
The closures are within blocks of the U.N. complex on First Avenue, which hosts the annual gathering of world leaders. The N.Y.P.D. and the Secret Service, among other federal agencies, have joint presence in Midtown during the assembly session, though it is unclear what role, if any, the Secret Service played in Tuesday's response.
It is unclear what the package held or who reported it, and it is unknown if anyone has been taken into custody. There were no reports of injuries.
Such calls are commonplace in Midtown and rarely result in anything serious. In August 2025, the bomb squad closed down part of Times Square after a cylindrical object was left outside a police substation on West 43rd Street. The package was declared non-hazardous after 90 minutes, and a man has since been charged with leaving a false bomb.
