"For Iran, the Clock is Ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won't be anything left of them," Trump wrote in the two-sentence post. "TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!"
The warning comes as ceasefire talks have stalled since the April 7 agreement that ended active combat following the February 28 joint US-Israeli attack on Iran. Trump has demanded Iran dismantle its missile arsenal, sever ties with regional allies, and end its nuclear enrichment program — terms Iranian officials reject as excessive.
Escalating Rhetoric Amid Stalled Negotiations
Trump's latest post followed an AI-generated image he shared Saturday showing himself atop a military ship with the caption "It was the calm before the storm." The president has repeatedly used violent language against Iran, including an April 7 post that critics called genocidal: "A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again."
Iran's government-sponsored Mehr news agency responded Sunday, saying the US has offered "no tangible concessions" in recent proposals. Armed forces spokesperson Abolfazl Shakarchi warned that further American threats would result in "more crushing and severe blows."
The war began nearly eight months ago and has already drawn warnings from legal experts that Trump's threats against civilian infrastructure — including power plants and bridges — could violate the Geneva Convention. In May, the president told Fox News that Iranian officials will "be blown off the face of the earth" if they attack US vessels.
Al Jazeera correspondent Almigdad Alruhaid, reporting from Tehran, said Iranian officials view the escalating rhetoric as unacceptable and are "projecting defiance rather than giving an immediate response." He warned that hostile remarks from both sides signal the ceasefire could shatter imminently.
For American taxpayers already bearing the costs of prolonged Middle East engagement, Trump's strategy of maximum pressure through threats appears to have reached an impasse. The president's inability to secure Iranian concessions despite months of military action raises questions about whether his approach can deliver results without escalating into a broader regional conflict that could further strain US resources and military commitments worldwide.
